John Shaw Jr was born circa 1622 at England. On 5 May 1643, at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA,, John Shaw Jr first appears on the Plymouth records on 5 May 1843 when he and Stephen Bryant bought from Edward Doty for £16 two lots totalling 40 acres of upland at High Cliff. He was war in 1645; In 1645 John Shaw is one of eight men who went out against the Narragansetts. He was in court between 1644 and 1651 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. John Shaw Jr was frequently in court. On 7 Jan 1644/5 Francis Goole complained against him in an action of trespass; Shaw paid damages of 21s.
On 3 Mar 1544/5 John Shaw Jr was nvolved with others in an undescribed case, and was fined £2.
On 4 Aug 1646 there was a complaint of an unknown character about a debt owned by John Shaw Jr to Tobais Taylor. Four men were chosen to decide, but when they could not agree a fifth man was chosen. The case was then settled, the court ordering that Taylor be paid "in peeces of eight, according to ye ship's account" That is to say, John Shaw Jr shall pay to Tobias Taylor 50s, according to the seamens account.
On 6 June 1649, John Shaw Jr was presented for "profaning the Lords day for attending on the tar pits" He was sentenced to "sit in the stocks for this, which was accordingly executed"; Stephen Bryant was also presented for "carrying a barrel to the said pits on the same Lords day" but was cleared with an admonition. Both John Shaw Jr and Stephen Bryant were almost surely distilling tar, an essential material in the colonial period for many purposes, particularly repairing ship hills.
John Shaw Jr and Edward Doty were involved in a series of disputes. On 6 Mar 1649/50, Edward Doty complained against John Shaw Jr. The jury ordered Shaw to pay 35s in damages and court costs, and to "make good the iron work". Again, in what was probably the same case, on 7 May 1650, John Shaw Jr and his brother James were ordered to pay court costs and 35s to Edward Doty. However, on 6 June 1650, Edward Doty and John Shaw Jr were in court again for two more suits brought by John Shaw Jr. First, a complaint against Doty - with the jury finding for the defendant. Second, a complaint against Doty for £20 in an action of trespass - with the jury finding for the plaintiff 3s and charges for the suit of 16s 6d.
On 8 June 1651, a jury presented John Shaw, James Shaw, Samuel Cutbert, Benjamin Eaton, Goodwife Gannett, Martha Haward and William Snow for "vaine, light, and lacivious carriage at an unseasonable time of night". On 7 Oct 1651, James Shaw and Goodwife Gannett were ordered to pay 30s apiece or otherwise to receive corporal punishment by whipping; the others were admonished. However, the court added: "And as for John Shaw, hee is lyable to punishment when oppertunitie seruth." On 9 June 1651, at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA,, John Shaw Jr must have known that he was in serious trouble with the Plymouth authorities. On 9 June 1651, one day after he was presented, he sold the only propery he had - 8 acres of marsh he had bought two years earlier from Mistress Ann Atwood - to his brother-in-law Stephen Bryant. John Jr is said by Shurtleff in his undocumented genealogy to have gone "to Rhode Island and had a great day, roasted an ox whole and nothing is known of him after. it is supposed he went back to England. His father, John Shaw Sr, sought his return to the Colony, and in a deed of gift of 26 March 1658 promised John Shaw Jr one quarter of his purchase land if he came within four years - before 1 March 1661/2. This is the last heard of John Shaw Jr and by 30 Jan 1663-4, the one quarter of John Shaw Sr's purchase land promised to John Shaw Jr was formally conveyed to Sgt James Shaw. He died after 9 June 1651 at England.
