Henry Hale died September 13 after a long illness. The funeral was held in Fairfield, his native town, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr Hale is survived by his wife, three sons, Daniel, William and Thomas Hale, and a daughter Anna Hale. He was buried at St Louis Cemetery, Highgate, Franklin, VT, USA.
Henry H Hale II It has been previously noted that Henry Hale's parents were Henry Hale and Jane Doogan. I believe this was based on the 1860 & 1870 census, as a Henry was living in their household. This was Henry E (and his marriage and death certificate were located in MA) These census do not list relationships, so the assumption was made that he was a son. Henry's death certificate sates that his parents are Thomas Hale and Anna Burns. It was verified by obituary that his is the proper death certificate. Henry's marriage certificate to Anna Maloney also states his parents as Thomas and Anna. He immigrated in 1864. He was a Farmer.      Abiel Shurtleff was born on 23 June 1666 at Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, USA; Born soon after the untimely death of his father and there was considerable debate as to what his name should be. By some it was thought that he should be called after Boanerges (Children of Thunder), as mentioned in the New Testament; but the difficulty of converting the plural name into the singular number fortunately prevailed against the infliction of an appellation which was far from being euphonious. The scriptural name Abiel, which interpreted into English from Hebrew, signifies "God, my father", was adopted as the most satisfactory, since it was sufficiently indicative of his posthumous birth. He was baptized on 30 June 1666 at Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, USA. He married Lydia Barnes, daughter of Jonathan Barnes and Elizabeth Hedge, on 14 January 1695/96 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Abiel Shurtleff died on 28 October 1732 at Plympton, Plymouth, MA, USA, at age 66. He was buried on 28 October 1732 at Lakenham Cemetery, North Carver, Plymouth, MA, USA.
Abiel Shurtleff was. Mr Shurtleff was a very noted housewright, as was his father, and built "all the meeting houses in his time".

William Shurtleff Sr was born on 16 May 1624 at Parish of Ecclesfield, Hallam, West Riding, Yorkshire, England; "William Shurtleff was probably born in the parish of Ecclesfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in that portion called Hallamshire, in England in 1624. He married Elizabeth Lettice, daughter of Thomas Lettice and Ann (?), on 18 October 1655 at Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, USA. William Shurtleff Sr died on 23 June 1666 at Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, USA, at age 42. Shurtleff was killed when struck by lightning in the home of Mr. John Phillips on the 23rd day of June, in the year 1666. During a thunder storm, a bolt of lightning killed Mrs. Phillips, her son, and William Shurtleff. At the time he was struck, William had a child in hand and was holding his wife in the other. Both of the others escaped, but he was struck dead. There were 14 persons in the house at the time of the incident. One of the survivors wrote: "The woman of the house calling earnestly to shut the door which was done, instantly a terrible clap of thunder fell upon the house & rent the chimney & split the door in many places & struck most of the persons if not all. Timothy Rogers told me that when he came to himself he saw the house full of smoke & there was a terrible smell of brimstone & that fire lay scattered all about the floor. Whether the fire was scattered from the hearth by the violence of the stroke or fire from heaven he knew not. He thought first that all the people had been killed but himself till it pleased God to revive the most of them. But three of them were mortally struck with God's arrows that they never breathed more [that is] the wife of John Phillips & a son of his about 20 years of age or upwards and one William Shurtleff. The said William Shurtleff who having been a little before burnt out of his own house was with his family a present sojourner there. There is also a dog slain under a table behind two little children. Sitting on the table ledge was the wife of Mr. Shurtleff, being big with child near her full time was graciously revived." William's son, Abiel, was born between the 23rd and 30th of June, 1666.

From T. Alden's Account: "he" [William Shurtleff] "lived in Marshfield and was killed with lightning, in 1666. Thr tradition is that he was endeavouring to comfort his wife, who was much terrified at the severity of the tempest, and had just taken an infant from her arms and was seated, having one child between his knees and the other two in his lap; yet the flash of lightning, which killed him, did neither of them nor his wife any injury"

FROM THUNDER & LIGHTING; AND DEATHS AT MARSHFIELD: At the time of this storm there were fourteen persons in the common sitting-room of the house of Mr Phillips. There persons were mostly seated around the room. Mr Shurtleff was sitting beside his wife, holding her hand in his, and having one of their children in his arms, the other being between him and a table under which was a dog. The storm of rain coming on with great violence, Mrs. Phillips requested to have the door closed. Whereupon a stroke of lightning passed down the chimney, which it rent to pieces, smote down most of the persons, if not all, instantly killing Mr Shurtleff, Mrs Phillips and Jeremiah Phillips, and then passed out through the door, splitting it into fragments. This occured on Saturday; and they were buried on the following day, being the twenty fourth, according to and entry made in the Marshfield town records. He was buried on 24 June 1666 at Winslow Cemetary, Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, USA.
William Shurtleff Sr was also known as Shircliff This name had various spellings Chyrclyf, then Shircliff, later Schirclyff, and afterwards Shiercliffe. He immigrated from 1632 to 1634; Ecclesfield is about 5 miles due north of Sheffield and about 20 miles from Scrooby, long since shown to be the gathering place of the Puritans before they left England for Holland. In this village as a seat called "Whitney Hall" and at another called Ecclesfield Hall once resided the only family of which we have any knowledge, who bore the name previous to the appearance of William Shurtleff or any other person of the name in America. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to suppose that he, living so near the nestlingplace of the Leyden Pilgrims and being of an enthusiastic age and ardent temperment, became fired by the spirit of adventure or inspired with the holy zeal of the Puritans, and this became one of the first settlers of the town of Plymouth and one of the forefathers of New England. He was apprenticeship on 16 May 1634; Nothing is known concerning the parentage of William Shurtleff, the exact time of his arrival in New England or the causes that led him to leave England. He is so young on his first appearance in Plymouth that he was bound apprentice there to Thomas Clarke for the term of eleven years beginning on 16th May 1634. The Thomas Clarke to whom young Shurtleff was apprenticed was by trade a carpenter. He came to Plymouth on the "Ann" in the summer of 1623. He lived there until his death in 1697. He was in court on 5 June 1644 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. "Willm Shertcliffe for breaking the peace vpon John Smyth is fyned v."" He lived in 1646 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA; In 1646, Mr. Shurtleff appears in a list of names comprising the townsmen of Plymouth.

While in Plymouth he resided on his estate at Strawberry Hill near the Reed Pond and not far from the present bounds of Kingston. He was appointed on 3 June 1656 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA; He is chosen one of 'the Surveyors for the highwaies' for the town of Plymouth. He moved in 1660 to Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, USA; In about 1660, William Shurtleff moved to Marshfield. He lived in the neighborhood of White's Ferry, near the mouth of the North river. He lived in 1666; His home was destroyed by fire in the early part of 1666. He was living in the home of a neighbor, John Phillips, when he was killed by lightning that same year."

Thomas Lucas was born in 1630 at England; From Lucas Genealogy: Morant's "Hist of Essex" Vol 1 gives the following note: "this Thomas Lucas left no male heirs and the title then went to his brother John's dau, Mary. who was known as Baroness Lucas of Crudwell, Wilts".
In "Ancient Landmarks of Plymoyth, Mass" by Davis in Fort Wayne Ind. Library "Sir Thomas Lucas came to Plymouth Mass from the west of England, and by a wife, whose name is unknown, had 5 children." This Thomas Lucas is said to have been killed in King Phillip's War about 1675. Many descs of this line are members of the DAR. It is a well known fact that in those days when men left England they automatically lost their right to the family title. He married Mrs Thomas Lucas ? Thomas Lucas died in January 1678/79 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Thomas Lucas died as he lived, and on 6th January 1678/79 a Coroner's Jury reported that Thomas Lucas, "being very ancient & decrepid in his limbes, and it being very cold, and haveing drunk some drinke, gott a violent fall into a ditch, in a very dangerous place, could not recover himselfe, but bruised his body, and lying all night in the cold, soe hee came by his end." When he died, some of the color must have gone out of Plymouth.

There have been false claims that he was killed in King Phillip's War. Most notably From James Savage and Diary of King Phillips War. and then duplicated over and over (i.e Shurtleff Genealogy).

Thomas Lucas was in court on 2 October 1658 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Fined ten shillings for being drunk a second time. He was in court on 6 October 1659 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Fined ten shillings for being drunk. He was in court on 2 October 1660 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Fined ten shillings for being drunk twice. He was in court on 5 March 1660/61 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Found guilty of being drunk a third time. He was sentenced to find sureties (Bond) for his good behavior. John Wood and George Bonham each put up £10 to assure his appearance at the next court date. But on the same day that Thomas Lucas presented himself at court he was charged with being "distempered with drink, and for his unseeming behavior both in words and gestures". He was committed to prison and fined forty shillings. No duration of his imprisonment is noted. The belief is that he probably only served a day or so. He was in court on 7 May 1661 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Broke his bonds for good behavior when he was found with Ann Savory, wife of Thomas, at the time of "public worship on the Lord's day drunk and under the hedge in an uncivil and beastly manner". He was to appear at the next court. He was in court on 10 June 1661 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. The court called for £20 forfeit of bond. Upon further consideration the amount was reduced to £10. He was in court on 3 March 1662/63 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. "it being the third time he hath ben convicted and sentanced in the Court for being drunk", Thomas Lucas was sentenced to be publicly whipped. The court ordered the sentence to be stayed "untill hee shalbee taken drunke the next time, and then hee is to bee fortwith taken and whipt, without further presenting to the Court". He was in court on 1 March 1663/64 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. He was publicly whipped for being drunk. "Hee was sentanced formerly for being drunke the third time; nevertheles the execution therof was [respited] untill hee should bee found drunke againe, which accordingly was witnessed against him, and soe the said punishment was inflicted on him as aforsaid". He was in court on 30 March 1664 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Charged with abusing his wife. Stephen Bryant and George Bonham each put up £5 for his appearance in court. He was in court on 8 June 1664 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Sentenced to sit in the stocks for swearing. He was in court on 9 June 1665 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Sentenced to be imprisoned for 24 hours for "swearing by the wounds of God". He was in court on 3 October 1665 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Fined ten shillings for being drunk. He was in court on 2 March 1668/69 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Appeared in court to answer to the charge of abusing his wife and children. He promised reformation. His wife testified that since his presentment, he had not abused them. The court cleared him with an admonition. He was in court on 7 June 1670 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Fined 3 shillings, 4 pence for striking Samuel Jenney. He was in court on 3 June 1673 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Found guilty of being drunk. Court released him with a warning. He was in court on 1 June 1675 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Charged for "being distempered with drink". The court ordered that no one sell him alcohol; "it being soe oftens, and that hee hath borne severall particular punishments gradually, and can not be reclaimed, it was ordered concerning him, that all that sell drinke be stricktly ordered and prohibited to lett him have none". He was in court on 30 October 1675 at Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA. Sentenced to be whipped at the post for "reviling some deceased magistrates and for being drunk."
