Samuel and family moved from Raymond, New Hampshire, to Waterborough in September of 1764. One of the first Constables of Waterborough when the town was incorporated (March 6,1787), Samuel was the first Representative from Waterborough to the District Court of Massachusetts, 1789-91, and in 1794.
Perhaps his most noteworthy endeavor was being involved in the effort to have the Province of Maine set off as the State of Maine, which came to be in 1820. A sketch in the Lewiston, Maine, "Journal" of 27 February 1889 states: "Samuel Scribner was a great man. Among other things that he set on foot was to get the Province of Maine set off as a State from Mass. He also led in getting the County Seat of York moved from the town of York on the seacoast to what is now Alfred, Me. He also led in getting a portion of the town of Sanford set off as the town of Alfred as the York County Seat, in 1808. Samuel Scribner and two neighbors built on the original Scribner farm at Waterboro, Me., about 1790, a two-story building which was used for the alternate sittings of the York County Court until Alfred was set off as the permanent seat of the County. This building was also used for Town Meetings, for a school house, and for the First Baptist Church. An old record says, 'This house was built by Square Scribner, Square Burleigh and Square Warren.' "
Samuel enlisted July 1775 at Hollis, ME, and served 8 months in the Revolutionary War. He was about 40 years old when he enlisted and was a noble soldier.
According to his grandson, David W. Scribner, Samuel suffered a paralyzing stroke several years before his death. He lost the use of the left side of his body and was a cripple for the rest of his life (See Notes for DAVID W. SCRIBNER [50-i,160], below). Samuel is buried "in the old Scribner burying ground on the old original Scribner farm forming the Alfred line, at the head of Shaker Pond in Waterboro" (Letter from William Marshall Scribner to Abba Ella Knight in 1899). According to this letter, also buried there are Samuel's son, John, and John's son, Rowell.2

Joseph U Scribner also went by the name of Commonly called "Uncle Jose."1 He was born on 2 September 1766 at Waterboro, York, ME, USA.1,2 He was the son of Edward Scribner and Sarah Taylor.1 Joseph U Scribner married Hannah Dockum on 26 February 1788 at Waterboro, York, ME, USA.1,3,2 Bought of his father, Edward, for $800 the SE half of lot 157.1 Joseph U Scribner married Polly or Mary Knight, daughter of John Knight and Elizabeth Davis, on 4 June 1806.1 Joseph U Scribner was court - criminal on 4 May 1816; From Otisfield History:
He was a man of ugly temper and one day while chopping wood, Squire Keith of Oxford came to arrest him for debt. When the officer told him his business Jose said "You come an inch nearer and whit goes your horses head". Keith disregarded the warning and Jose struck the horse in the neck with his axe and killed it. I think Jose was taken to Portland and put in jail on account of it as in the town records of May 4, 1816, it was "voted to authorize Oliver Peirce to bail Joseph Scribner out of Gaol, if he should think proper, when in Portland, on the writ which he is detained there for, and free him from harm."1 He died on 20 November 1843 at Otisfield, Cumberland, ME, USA, at age 77.1,2 He was buried at Drunkertown Yard.1

Samuel ran a store for several years at Ben Edwards Corner in Otisfield, but later moved to Naples. In 1850, Samuel, Mary and son David were living in Lovell, where Samuel was engaged in farming (1850 Census of Lovell [op. cit.], 129).
At the time of the War of 1812, Samuel was living in Gorham, Maine. He enlisted in Capt. Tappan Robie's Company of Gen. James Irish's Brigade (Massachusetts Militia), a unit that marched to Portland from Gorham in 1814, staying three months to help defend Portland from the British fleet lurking at sea outside Portland Harbor. They saw no action, but this service "enabled many of these soldiers to obtain Land Warrants under an Act of Congress" passed some years later (Josiah Pierce, A HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF GORHAM, MAINE [Portland: Foster & Cushing, and Bailey & Noyes, 1862], 141).2

Daniel was known as "Long Daniel" because he was a tall, slim man. He was a farmer in Otisfield and, at one time, a partner with his brother, Joseph, in a mill at East Otisfield (It burned in December 1901). He lived in Portland for several years, operating a hotel. Then, he moved on to Boston for a year or two before returning to Maine and Harrison where he lived for 15 years. He then moved back to Otisfield for a few years, then he moved to Bolster's Mills. Daniel is also remembered as being one of the old time fifers who played for the musters and other gatherings.
For a few years in the late 1800's, Daniel wrote an occasional newspaper column for the "Oxford County Advertiser" in which he told of his recollections of persons and events in Otisfield during the 19th century. For example, one article, "Recollections of an Old Man in His Eighty-first Year," in the 7 September 1883 edition, told about early wagons and carriages in Otisfield.
In the article he wrote for the 1 February 1884 edition, he states "I was born in Otisfield in the second year of the present century." Three years later, in the 3 June 1887 edition, he states "I was born 18 October 1802."2 Daniel Scribner was born on 16 October 1792 at Otisfield, Cumberland, ME, USA; Scribner Website states 18 Oct 1802.1,2 He was the son of Edward Scribner and Sarah Moody.1 Daniel Scribner died on 10 June 1889 at Otisfield, Cumberland, ME, USA, at age 96.1,2

John (40-ii, 122) was known as "Bud John" because of the way he demonstrated how to trap partridges. He would set a trap, put it on a log and then say, "The partridge will come along and, bud, bud, bud," putting his finger on the log as he spoke. When he got to the trap he would put his finger in it, almost losing the finger in the process.
John and Elizabeth faced tragedy after tragedy in their lifetime. On 26 October 1843 their six-year-old daughter, Annis, burned to death when her clothing somehow caught fire. Four years later, one of the twins, Henrietta (now aged five), fell into the fireplace and died on 12 December 1847. On 24 September 1862 the other twin, Georgianna, died at age 20. Two years later, during the Civil War, their son, Jackson, died in New Orleans on 2 May 1864. Jackson's wife, Ruth, gave birth to a son just two days later, but that infant died only 12 days after birth. John and Elizabeth are buried in Scribner Hill Cemetery, Upper Yard. Nearby are the graves of Jackson's infant son and Georgianna, and a monument to Jackson, who is buried in Louisiana.2 John "Bud" Scribner was born on 9 May 1790 at Waterboro, York, ME, USA.1,2 He was the son of Joseph U Scribner and Hannah Dockum.1 John "Bud" Scribner married Elizabeth Whitham, daughter of Ichabod Whitham and Hannah Scribner, in 1819.2 John "Bud" Scribner died on 9 September 1864 at Otisfield, Cumberland, ME, USA, at age 74.1,2

In one of the letters preserved by Basil Kinney, Malinda (Scribner) Bogle (a daughter of Thomas' brother, Nathaniel) remembers Thomas with these words:
"Uncle Tom, who never married, made his home with my father. He was a small man. He dug wells, was a good singer. He died while sitting in the stable door at the hotel in Jackson Brook, singing a hymn, 'We must be born again.' He would never laugh, just smile, and we children used to watch him and say, 'Now Uncle Tom, you did laugh.' He was buried at Jackson Brook, father and brother, Wallace, attended to that" (Kinney, "Charles E. & Emma [Springer] Scribner Letters" [op. cit.], Unpaginated. 6th page).2 Thomas Scribner was born on 27 August 1798 at Otisfield, Cumberland, ME, USA.1,2 He was the son of Joseph U Scribner and Hannah Dockum.1 Thomas Scribner died after 1879 at Jackson Brook, Washington, ME, USA. Nathaniel (who went by "Nathan") was a farmer. However, he is remembered as having had several other skills, according to his daughter, Malinda, who wrote in a letter addressed to her niece, Hannah Eva (Scribner) Haney:
"My father was a shingle weaver, making shingles by hand. He was a forester and looked after the land for a Mr. Todd. He learned the shoemakers trade when a young man and I can remember he made me a pair of shoes once. He was a great guide and good hunter. He helped spot the road from Topsfield to Houlton and from there to Ashland, Me. He was a good singer and had a good education, was fond of children who all called him Uncle Nathan. He was an expert with a canoe or boat and a great swimmer. He could swim on his back.
Mother had a good education for those days. She learned the trade of the tailor when young; she was a nice cook and used to make wedding cakes for all the weddings in the neighborhood. She was also a dressmaker. She was very handy with her needle. She used to do a lot of embroidering, but she had a shock about the time I was twelve years old and did not do much after that. She was a mid-wife.
My father's home used to be a place for all travelers to stop. It was the 'home by the side of the road.' Father never refused to keep anyone all night, nor to give them something to eat. When a traveler came that was so dirty he did not want to put him in a bed he would make a bed for him by the big open fire and sit up all night to keep the fire going to provide warmth for him. He never charged for keeping them nor providing their meals. They were always welcome. He was a jolly man, always telling stories and singing."
