On 28 December 1658, at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA,, On 28 Dec 1658 James Babson was granted "twelve acres of fresh meadow [at Beaver Dam] lying above the Mill, also twenty acres of upland lying by the side of it". This was where he and his wife settled and was known as the James Babson farm. It was here that he built the little stone cooperage shop, still standing today, which is open to visitors every summer at Gloucester.
James, a cooper, made barrels that were taken to Good Harbor Beach, filled with fish, and shipped to England and the West Indies. Roger W. Babson's research indicated that James Babson's stone shop was the first factory on Cape Ann. He was court - civil in June 1660 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA; James Babson was in court in 1660 at Gloucester when James Babson's neighbor, John Jackson, was accused of lascivious behavior toward his own maid, Mary Somes. All the rest and remainder was to go to his wife. If she should marry again, then all the residue was to be divided equally amongst her children. His wife and his son, Phillip, were named to be the executors.

Ebenezer Babson was born on 8 December 1667 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA. He "Thus ended the year 1692, except a strange and inexplicable occurrence that happened this year at Gloucester. In the month of July this year, there appeared several men, as they that saw them apprehended, not together, but sometimes one only, at other times two or three together, and once about a dozen in company, and heard them stamping in the night about the garrison. Several men shot at them, and they were seen to fall down as dead; but when those that supposed they had killed them came near the place, they would either disappear, or stand up and run away; and though they ran over muddy places, they left no track behind them. One Ebenezer Babson, being in the woods alone, heard the report of a gun fired by one of those which cut off the limb of a pine bush near to him, and lodged in a hemlock tree, which was after cut out, and preserved a long time, if not to this day. For the truth of these strange occurrences, we have the testimony of this Babson, Day, Hammond, Ellery, Dolliver, who with others fired at them, but to no purpose." [Ebenezer]" may have been distinguished in an encounter with a less ethereal enemy, and thus have been the occasion of the loyal saying, 'The knife that Babson killed the bear with'". This legend now appears in the couplet: "Babson, Babson, killed a bear, With his knife, I do declare."
Roger W. Babson in his Story of Bear Skin Neck puts it as follows: "...Ebenezer Babson, who then resided at the Farms, saw the bear attack the boy [his nephew, Henry Witham]. He immediately attacked the bear to get his attention away from the child, but having no gun he permitted the bear to follow him into the water. There - after a terrific struggle - Ebenezer killed the bear with a fish knife."
The story is continued by George Jay Babson: "He then brought the bear onto the shore, skinned him, and spread the skin on the rocks to dry. Ebenezer died shortly afterwards, presumably at sea, but his nephew Henry Witham, whose life he saved, lived to a ripe old age. Naturally, he often told the story of his rescue, and when people asked how Ebenezer killed the bear, he would reply: 'With his knife, I do declare.'" in 1692 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA. He died before 1696.

Isabel Babson ? The surname of Babson is extremely rare in England. It is possible that after Isabel and her sons left there was no other family that bore the name of Babson left in the country. When one considers that in 1637, Isabel was a widow with a married daughter, two unmarried sons, aged 25 and 15, and had lost her youngest daughter three years previously, it is not surprising that she elected to undertake a new life in the colonies. One may also add the fact that there had been serious outbraks of the plague in England as well as an unsettling economic depression an d"harassment by overzealous Church Officials"
She is also remembered through the Isabel Babson Maternity Wing at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester.
Isabel Babson Memorial Library. 69 Main St Gloucester, MA. She was born on 1 July 1579 at England. She married Thomas Babson circa 1605 at Somersetshire, Somersetshire, England. As of circa 1605,her married name was Babson. Isabel Babson ? emigrated in April 1637 from Weymouth, England; Captain of the vessel was John Driver. She lived on 25 September 1637 at Salem, Essex, MA, USA; The earliest known record of her in this country is dated 25 Sep 1637 and appears in the Salem Town Records. "Isabell Babson desires admittance to become an inhabitant" Isabel probably first settled at Salem as it was her port of disembarkation. She was. Served her community as a midwife.
Isabel Babson was one of Cape Ann's earliest midwives. She came to Cape Ann as a widow and mother from England in 1637. She delivered all the babies on Cape Ann from 1640 until her death on April 6, 1661.
She was court - civil on 24 September 1639 at Salem, Essex, MA, USA; John Woodbury, Peter Palfrey and John Balch, three of Salem selectmen, brought a civil suit against her. Although the records do not specify the charge, this type of case often involved property. She was court - civil on 29 June 1641 at Salem, Essex, MA, USA; She brought suit against John White. Samuel Colborne testified on the case. Although no specifics are given, the usual suits involved debts, defamations, trespassing, mening of fences, allowing "tippling" at one's house, etc. She lived in June 1642 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA; This move may have been brought by the arrival from England during this time period of her daughter Joan (Babson) Collins, with her husband John, and their children. It is also possible that the town officals of Gloucester offered her inducements to settle there because of her profession of midwifery. On July 1642, at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA,, Purchased land at what is now at 75-77 Front Street, Gloucester. The lot at Gloucester Harbor, which Isabel bought from Gloucester selectman, Thomas Milward, had formerly belonged to Thomas Ashley. Ashley's lot had been attached by Mr Wilward on 12 Jul 1642 in the first insolvency case in the Essex County Courts. Isabel probably purchased this lot soon after July 1642. A portion of this lot is situated at what is now 75-77 Front Street and continued in the family about a century and a half. On 1644, at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA,, Granted land in 1644 at Main Street, Gloucester. Her dwelling, a little to the west of Porter Street, was located at what is now 69 Main Street. She was court - civil on 30 March 1657 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA; Isabel was in court again on 30 Mar 1657 at Gloucester. Her descendants are most fortunate in having an extraordinary account in Isabel's own words fully preserved from a record -- a distinction reserved generally for a Winthrop or a Spotswood or other colonial governors. As a neighbor and midwife, Isabel had been asked to testify in a scandalous court case in which Thomas and Margaret Prince accused William Browne of causing the death of "Goodie" Prince's unborn child. William Browne was found guilty and was forced "to lie in prison one week and be fined twenty marks and pay costs to Thomas Prince etc." These words of Isabel afford us the only true glimpse into her character, her religious beliefs, her compassion, her medical knowledge. The fact that she was literate is verified by her ability to sign her name, a true achievement in her day. (Essex Qt. Ct. Records, 1:36). She died on 6 April 1661 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA, at age 81. She was buried after 6 April 1661 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA; She was buried in 1661 at Gloucester although the exact location of her grace is unknown. A simple stone has been placed in the ancient Bridge Street Burying Ground in memory of this courageous woman, an honored and beloved citizen of her community, whose memory lives on as an inspiration to her many descendants. This stone giver her birth date as 1 July 1579. Her estate was probated on 25 June 1661 at Gloucester, Essex, MA, USA; Administration on the estate of Isabel Babson, widow, late deceased, was granted to her son, James Babson, on 25: 4: 1661 [25 June 1661]. The inventory of the estate of Isable Babson of Glositer, taken by Samuel Delaber [Doliver] and Phillip Stainwood and sworn to in court by James Babson, before Hilliard Veren, cleric: "The Vallue of those lands and goods com to twenty seven pounds, six shillings" on 9 Apr 1661. As a tribute to her memory, Roger W. Babson established the Isabel Babson Memorial Library on Main Street, which specializes in books for expectant mothers.
