Adelaide CuchAge 16. He Statement from David (1880): "I belonged to the Horse Company in Otisfield and was about 28 years old when I joined it. Benjamin Stevens was Captain at the time. I left Otisfield when about 25 years old and worked at Craigies Mills (Oxford). I have been blind for more than ten years, caused by an injury to my head. I was unloading a wagon load of cotton in Mass. and was pitched head first to the ground, a distance of about 12 feet and was picked up for dead. Soon afterward I lost my eyesight and am now totally blind. I lived some time at Magalloway, 8 years at Blackstone Mass, and 2 or 3 years at Harrison. I have been here 10 years" in 1880. He died on 9 February 1892 at Oxford, Oxford, ME, USA, at age 92.

He was a man of ugly temper and one day while chopping wood, Squire Keith of Oxford came to arrest him for debt. When the officer told him his business Jose said "You come an inch nearer and whit goes your horses head". Keith disregarded the warning and Jose struck the horse in the neck with his axe and killed it. I think Jose was taken to Portland and put in jail on account of it as in the town records of May 4, 1816, it was "voted to authorize Oliver Peirce to bail Joseph Scribner out of Gaol, if he should think proper, when in Portland, on the writ which he is detained there for, and free him from harm." He died on 20 November 1843 at Otisfield, Cumberland, ME, USA, at age 77. He was buried at Drunkertown Yard.
