He (Research):DAR Index - Seaman, MA
Thomas D Francis listed in Soldiers of the Revolution and Ware of 1812 - History of AndroscogginCounty (pg 555)
He came to Leeds with the Stinchfields to give instruction to their children, and was the firstteacher in the town. He became a noted theologian and local statesman and exerted a salutary andpowerful effect in moulding the institutions and giving character to the town. He was the firstrepresentative (in 1804) to the General Court and was for a time in the State Senate and stood thepeer of the ablest in that body, and his memory is revered in town. In 1804, he was ordainedpastor of the First Baptist churchm which relation he sustained until his death, May 9, 1836.(History of Androscoggin County)
He served on the board of trustees of Monmouth Academy. Thomas Davis Francis was also known as Thomas Davies. He began military service in 1779 at Massachusetts SEAMAN
After the 1st voyage and returning to England, he enlisted on an English man-of-war vessel, and, with that vessel, was captured by the American ship Black Prince, commanded by RichardCrowninshield. He and his shipmates were confined in irons andnearly devoured by lice. Onapplication to the commodore, who was moved with sympathy for the youth, his shackles were removedand permission given him to mingle and labor with the sailors of the Black Prince who manned thecaptured man-of-war vessel and took her into an American port (presumably Boston), where theylanded in May 1778. The succeeding fall, this vessel was impressed into the American service, sentto the Maine coast to aid in driving the British from the Penobscot, and young Francis, havingsworn allegiance to the cause of America, acted in the capacity of 'captain of the top' in theengagement at Castine that soon followed, in which this vessel was an active participant. Soonafter this engagement, having proceeded up the Penobscot River to near where the city of Bangor isnow situated, and being hemmed in and pursued by a superior force of Red Coats, the vessel wasabondoned, blown up, and sunk in that river.
The crew escaped in the woods and set out through the wilderness for Falmouth (Portland) viaKennebec and Androscoggin valleys. For the first three days they were piloted by Indians and thenabandoned to find their way as best the could. At the end of fourteen days of tiolsome wandering, they came to a settlement where the city of Augusta is now located. From there their course laythrough Winthrop, Greene and Lewiston to New Gloucester, where they at last arrived - tired,foot-sore and nearly famished. In describing this journey Mr Francis said 'We are so destitute andhungry that, on one occasion, I stole a Bible and gave it to a Dutchman for a dinner, and thenstole it from him to barter again when hunger should press.' In New Glouster the crew rested andwere refreshed at the home of Thomas Stinchfield, the pioneer settler of Leeds, whose sympathy forthe fatigued and foot-sore soldier boy without home or relatives, moved him to tender the lad aplace in his family. This proposition he rejected and accompanied the crew to Gray. Destitute ofshoes and other necessities, with no prospect of an immediate supply or betterment of hiscondition, he decided to return to Stinchfield's, and when installed in his family, gave up hisroving propensity and decided to settle down to quiet life.
When he was sixteen years old his father died, leaving the industry he had founded to his widow andson. They took in as a partern, Richard C, Dodd, an Englishman who had been in Mr. Stanton'semploy, and moved their webbing machinery into a mill on the upper dam built by Gen. John Chandlerfor a clapboard mill. The water-powered enabled them to run their looms more rapidly, and theindustry was beginning to promise a competence when the disastrous fire of Apr 4, 1841, swepteverything away.
In the meantime webbing looms had been built by Fairbanks & co in the mill now owned by Mr McIlroy, and as Mr. Stanton was throughly acquainted with the business, they were glad to furnish himemployment. He carried his first month's wages home and turned it into his mother's lap to helpsupport the family. 'No, Thomas' said the mother, 'I am not going to take your money from you.Put it away and keep it.' He followed her advice, and when, in after time, his employers wished tosell their business, he was prepared to purchase it. As his business increased he bought one-halfof the mill and added new looms. He continued in this employment until 1875.
Mr. Stanton also started other industries at North Monmouth, the most successful of which was amill for manufacturing handles for agricultural implements.
Mr. Stanton was a stirring man. His manufacturing operations at North Monmouth were for many yearsa great help to the village, and his energy and generous impulses made him popular and widelyinfluential. He was intensely interested in politics and received nominations on the countyDemocratic ticket. He left monmouth in 1879 and moved to Alabama.
