On settling in this country he wished to take up his old emplyment, as he knew no other way ofgaining a livelihood, but he had no loom, nor did he know where one could be obntained on this sideof the water. With no guide but memory, he began to construct one. He knew nothing of the use oftools, and could not explain the complicated machinery to competent workmen. Consequently, he wasobliged to draw a chalk diagram of each seperate piece of the loom; and his delight may be imaginedwhen on testing the completed machine, it was found to do satisfactory work. This first loom wasrun by hand. Subsequently he conceived the idea of attaching water power to the machinery, andgreatly enlarged his first plans.
From Hallowell, he move to Readfield, from which he removed after a residence of five or six yearsto the Nraddock Chandler neighborhood of Winthrop. Here he erected a building for the manufactureof tape, which was afterward removed to North Monmouth.
Mr. Stanton prosecuted the manufacure of tape several years at North Monmouth. He used a handlook, and like C.M. Bailey when his business was in its infancy, made sales from house to house.Gradually the industry developed, and under the management of his son, Thomas L. Stanton, Esq.,became an enterprise of considerable importance. He began military service in 1812 Served in the English Army during the War of 1812, and remained in this country when the defeatedtroops returned after the ratification of peace. He immigrated in 1812 to America.
