COAT OF ARMS:
Arms: Silver a fess gules between three dragon heads erased vert.Crest: Out of a mural crown gules an arm, erect the sleeve gold grasping in silver dragon's handerased vert.
(New England Historical and Genealogical Register Vol CVII, Jan 1953)
This is a very old and distinguished Coat of Arms. it was granted to the Millet family in theearly 1600 century (John Millet 1616). The dragon or griffin, imaginary monsters, are represented as strong and fierce animals. Inarmory they are properly applied to tyranny or the overthrow of vicious enemy. The mural crown was given by the Romans to him who first mounted an enemy breach, hence itsdesignation: 'Muralis' signifying, in Latin, 'relating to wall'.
The hand grasping the griffin or dragon is well descriped in the motto:
'Manus Haec Inimica Tyrannis'
'This hand is hostile to tyrants.' He immigrated on 13 April 1635; Came to America on the ship 'Elizabeth'.
On the records he was called 'Mr' which was an honorary title in those days.
William Stagg was ship Master.
The trip to America: From Bonnie Riggs, genealogist, 3/6/02:I ran across a description not too longago of what the voyage from England to New England was like for the Puritans, taken fromcontemporaneous accounts. The stench from unbathed bodies and the animals, the vomit from so muchchronic sea-sickness. One can only imagine what this stench must have been like for Mary Millett, five months pregnant & and with a 2-year old in tow. The men bemoaning their decision to subjecttheir families to such fear, uncertainty, & physical rigors; the women castigating the husbands;the petty rivalries & gossip. And sustaining them throughout the voyage, their great faith. For theThomas Millett story is, above all, a Puritan tale of the Great Migration. His position as aTeaching Elder, his signing of the petition to allow no more Anabaptists in the Colony, his earlyFreeman status, the fact that the Dorchester town records were kept in his home until it burned, the absence of fines and admonishments all indicate to me that he was quite orthodox in his beliefsand behavior.
